Head Office Closed for Pentecost Holidays

Just a quick note that our head office (that’s basically: me) in Stuttgart, Germany, is closed from May 28 through June 10 for pentecost holidays. We’re heading for Lyon and Argel├Ęs-sur-Mer, France, and hope that the great weather there will be as sunny and warm as it is here in Germany right now. I will not read my personal email at the beach (no, no Blackberry, never!) or be available via iChat, but, of course, customer support as well as...

Bestseller Author likes DEVONthink

One of our users (thank you, Martin!) posted a few days ago that he notices that on the Author’s Note page (p. 414) in Michael Chabon’s new best seller novel, “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union,” Chabon writes: “This novel was written on Macintosh computers using Devonthink Pro and Nisus Writer Express.” Chabon won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2001 for his novel “Kavalier & Clay.” As we’ve not sponsored Mr. Chabon for putting us in there, we’re more than honored...

Tuesday Tip: Importing vs. Indexing

The question whether one should import or index files and folders in DEVONthink is often asked. The answer is easy: It simply depends on if you want your database to be portable, or not. Indexing items only creates references in the database that point to the original file. So when you move the file in the file system, the reference breaks and you can still find the document in DEVONthink (because its content is indexed) but when you select it,...

Tuesday Tip: Combining Databases

As DEVONthink cannot (yet) open multiple databases at a time, there can be the necessity to combine two databases. Here’s Bill DeVille’s quick guide to combining databases: Assume the contents of databases A and B are to be merged into database C. In the Finder, create two new empty folders, named A and B, which will be used to hold the contents of their corresponding databases. In DEVONthink Pro, open database A. Select all of the contents of the database....

So if you’re interested in DEVONagent and may one or two of the other applications, this is...

Tuesday Tip: Going Back to a Backup

Why-o-ever it may happen, databases can go corrupt. Be it a damaged file system, a system hang, or, Heaven forbid!, a DEVONthink crash. But, no reason to panic. First, run Tools > Verify & Repair. If DEVONthink cannot repair the database or if you are sure that you’ve lost some data, it’s time for the internal backups. By default, DEVONthink keeps two internal backups of the database index files that you can revert to at any time. Select Tools > Revert to...
