Tuesday Tip: Drive Your Scanner

DEVONthink Pro Office supports all scanners compatible to Apple Image Capture out-of-the-box. In addition it comes with an auto-configuration plugin for the Mac versions of the Fujitsu ScanSnap document scanners. But what do you do if your scanner is not supported? Or if you want to buy a high-end document scanner from Avision? Then you may want to have a look at ExactScan from ExactCODE. It’s a smart scan application that works with the whole Avision scanner line as well as...

Waiting for Godot, ehrr, Leopard

Just a quick note for all of you who want to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard as soon as it is out tomorrow: There will be issues with DEVONthink and DEVONagent that we will not be able to fix until Leopard finds it way onto the shelves. While we are a paying member of the Apple Developer Connection, the latest build of Leopard that is available to us is from September 21, 2007. Apple has not yet deployed...

A few more Fall updates

To finish our Fall updatemania, we have just posted new, universal binaries of BlueService, CalcService, HotService, PDF2RTFService, and WordService. Phew, done! See our news page for more information on the updates.

DEVONthink and the iPhone

I have just added a new tutorial for DEVONthink Pro Office to the DEVONacademy: How to access your database from an Apple iPhone. It explains how to call the iPhone applet from the iPhone in your local network ad how to set up your router so that you can get access to your Mac and the DEVONthink Pro Office database running on it from the outside. It’s not a complete hands-on set-up guide, but it gets you an idea, at least....

Your Opinion is Welcome

We’ve just received a charming comment from Jeffrey Deuel, who recently tried out DEVONthink Pro Office and seems relatively satisfied with it: My God — this has to be the coolest software I’ve ever used. I just downloaded Devonthink Pro Office to use with my new ScanSnap. I’ve never had this much fun filing stuff and shredding originals.     Besides simply posing with a nice user testimonial, I want to take the opportunity to point out that all of us here...

Tuesday Tip: Cornell Notes Template

If you are used to the ‘Cornell Notes’ notetaking system, there is no need for not using it in DEVONthink Pro. Bill DeVille has developed an easy to use Cornell Notes template. Technically the template consists of an RTF table with two rows and two columns; The two cells in the top row are merged and the top row is given a colored background so that they can serve as the title area. The relative widths of the cells in a row can be...

The Downside of the Second Brain

43Folders time management and productivity guru Merlin Mann talks about the downside of using an outboard brain in his blog. As we’re using exactly this wording as the claim for DEVONthink *whistle*, I had to let you know about this article and Merlin’s extraordinary blog 43Folders.

Autum is Here, and Two Updates

The leaves here are turning to yellow, red, and brown. Fall is finally here, my favorite season. I spend more work time in our local coffee shop than in my office just because of the lovely view onto Market Square. Nevertheless, we’re not lazy! Today, we have some long overdue updates for you: EasyFind 4.0 and PhotoStickies 5.6. Not enough, we’ve also made PhotoStickies freeware again! Happy searching and sticking! See our news page for more information on the updates.

Tuesday Tip: Finding scanned PDFs without OCR layer

Do you have a large library of scanned files and want to import it into DEVONthink Pro, but you have no clue which of them you have already run through text recognition (OCR)? No problem, as DEVONthink Pro comes with great AppleScript supports: Download this Collect Items without Text script Unzip it and place it into ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink Pro/ Import all your scanned PDFs into DEVONthink Select all those PDFs in DEVONthink Select ‘Collect Items without Text’ from DEVONthink Pro’s...
