Tuesday Tip: Read your news with DEVONthink Pro

DEVONthink Pro not only organizes all your knowledge, it also lets you get more of it. Add RSS, RDF, or Atom feeds to your databases (e.g. by drag-and-drop of a feed: URL or by creating a new feed via Data > New > Feed) where they appear like groups with an orange RSS icon. DEVONthink now adds new content from the Internet to the feeds every few minutes. Define the interval in DEVONthink’s Preferences, RSS tab, or update the feed manually using the contextual menu. Newly arrived items are marked as ‘unread’, just like in any other news feed reader, and are marked ‘read’ as soon as you have read them.

So why use DEVONthink Pro for reading RSS feeds? DEVONthink archives all articles automatically for you together with your other correspondence. Integrate live news with your projects or let DEVONthink automatically fill your knowledge base with all new relevant articles that fit your research. In addition, you can not only subscribe to RSS feeds published by news sites or blogs but also to search results! Search engines like Yahoo, Technorati, or Google News provide RSS links.

To easily add an RSS feed to DEVONthink, make DEVONthink Pro the default RSS reader in Mail.app’s Preferences. Clicking an RSS feed link adds it to DEVONthink Pro’s global inbox (starting with 2.0 public beta 4).

Is there a way to define an own stylesheet for RSS? DT’s Default.css has a rather small font size, and Tiger.css could do with more leading, IMHO.

The trick to add an RSS feed from Mail to DTP 2.0 does not work on my side.
I made what is recommended: DTP as default RSS reader, click on the feeds but nothing in the Global Inbox.
    Am I doing something wrong?

  3. Eric says:

@Sami: At the moment not without figgling with the interiors of the application package.

@Christophe: Check your Preferences, Import tab, Destination. The RSS feed ends up in your default destination.

  4. Christophe says:

    Thank you Eric.
My default destination is the Inbox of current database but nothing ends up in it nor in any group of this database nor in the global inbox… nor in the trash (lol).
May be I am doing something wrong in Mail? I select in Mail an RSS feed (nothing in DTP) then I select and click a news (nothing in DTP) and finally, within the news, I click on “read more…” (my default browser is launched and still nothing in DTP).
    Your help, welcome.
    Thank you!

@Christophe: Oh, you’re trying to do this from *Mail*. Sorry. Unfortunately, Mail does not allow you do drag out the RSS feeds *at all* (maybe a feature request to Apple would be good here). My tip was for feed URLs in Safari, for example.

  6. Christophe says:

    Aaargh!
Given I have my RSS feeds set up in Mail (in addition to Safari), this sentence “make DEVONthink Pro the default RSS reader in Mail.app’s Preferences. Clicking an RSS feed link adds it to DEVONthink Pro…” confused me.
    Works better now. Thank you!
