Tuesday tip: Annotate screen captures in DEVONthink

Have you ever used those fancy screen capture applications that allow you to annotate on a screen capture? We had previously blogged about a procedure to change the location of screen captures, Make screenshots directly in your inbox. Combine that tip with this one and you’ll have a your own version right inside DEVONthink.

  1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app.
  2. Paste: defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf and press Return.
  3. Paste: killall SystemUIServer and press Return.

Now when you make your screen capture, you will end up with a PDFSelect the PDF in DEVONthink and add notes, arrows, even links!

Note that this is a system-wide change, not just for DEVONthink. If you want to change the format back then just repeat the steps but use “png”, “jpg”, or “tiff” (without the quotes) for the type.

I use SnapNDrag Pro for screenshots. It does not have PDF as a file option… Does the Terminal command work for all screenshot utilities or just Apple’s app?

This applies to screen captures via Apple’s screencapture mechanisms.

You can, of course, add the screenshot image to DEVONthink Pro Office, select it, and choose Data > Convert > To Searchable PDF. This converts it to a PDF including searchable (!) text layer that you can then annotate like any other PDF.
