Tuesday tip: Cookies for DEVONthink

— With apologies that the story won’t be as tasty as the title makes it sound.

New BookmarkWith OS X El Capitan’s new views on “safety”, cookies are no longer shared between Safari and other applications. This can have an effect you might not expect. Even if you have logged in to your account in Safari, capturing a Readability page via the Clip to DEVONthink extension will not honor you choice of font and font size from your Readability account settings. Here is how you can set a per-application cookie for DEVONthink (using Readability.com as the example).

  1. Create a new Bookmark in DEVONthink (Data > New > Bookmark, then enter “https://readability.com”).
  2. Log in to the account. This sets a cookie for DEVONthink.
  3. If you want, go to your archive, open a page, right-click and capture the page to PDF to verify the font choice is correct.
  4. Go to your browser and capture a Readability page via the Clip to DEVONthink extension.

You can use steps 1 and 2 to set these cookies for other web sites, as needed. Also, remember that you can use the bookmarks directly in DEVONthink if you want to browse without leaving the application.

I followed the instructions with my Readability account. Step 3 works beautifully. Step 4 using Clip to DevonThink and the same output (PDF one page) produces the original website page. I’ve tried closing and reopening applications to try to get the change to “set”, doesn’t seem to help.

OK addendum to my previous comment. If I use the Readability browser extension for Safari to bring the page into readability.com and THEN use DevonThink clip to save as PDF from Safari, it works fine. If I go to readability.com and open that same site from my reading list, then use DevonThink clip to save as PDF, the readability formatting isn’t preserved. That’s true for the site I reported in my previous comment, and it’s true for another site I just tried.
I have no idea why that’s the case, but as long as I can remember that little quirk I’ll get it to work.
