When the web breaks

AWS errors

If you weren’t aware of it already, there was a problem on the internet yesterday for a couple of hours. A little problem in terms of describing it: Amazon Web Services (AWS) was “having problems”. However, it was really a big problem for any app or service relying on the S3 services. One of those services was us. Our downloads were unavailable for a period of time. Slack, Trello, Time Inc., and others were affected. Some even experienced some home automation problems because...

Telecommuting, the DEVONtech lifestyle

By Jim Neumann. Jim is customer support specialist at DEVONtechnologies and works from home in Michigan, USA, or any other place he likes. Your alarm clock didn’t go off, your hot shower was lukewarm, traffic was backed up, you spilled coffee when that red coupe cut in front of you, and the boss was eyeing his watch as you limped in to your cubicle. This is a typical morning for a commuter. But there’s an alternative. According to current research, in...

Drei deutsche Autoren, die ihr mögen könntet

Like the software market the market for books is currently undergoing extreme changes. Many authors are trying to catch the attention of readers and customers, and ebooks, app stores, and flatrates are fueling the “price race to the bottom”. Therefore today I’d personally like to point those of you reading German to three extraordinary authors who happen to be also my personal friends. Maybe you’ll like their books and blogs. Der Büchermarkt befindet sich, wie auch der Softwaremarkt, derzeit in einer großen Umbruchphase. Viele Autoren buhlen um die Aufmerksamkeit...

The Day We Fight Back

We like the Internet and especially its openness. The latter, however, means also that everything that travels through it can be intercepted, stored, and analyzed. And we don’t like to be watched. We clearly support an open Internet free of mass surveillance. Please visit The Day We Fight Back and sign the action to show your support if you care about an Internet where people world-wide can communicate freely both in public or privately without being watched and analyzed by...

DEVONthink 2.7.2 in the App Store now

Mac App Store

After over a year Apple has finally reviewed and approved the latest update to DEVONthink Personal for the App Store. For a long time DEVONthink in the App Store stayed at version 2.3.4 whereas on our website we were already at 2.7.2. The reason: shortly after we released version 2.3.4, Apple required all applications in the App Store to implement a technology called “sandboxing“. This technology is intended to make the Mac experience more secure by ensuring that applications downloaded...

We favor “open” over “closed”

Open sign at Brownie's Family Restaurant, Bean Blossom, Indiana, USA

Since the very first telephone companies and there is an ongoing struggle between advocates (and adversaries) of open vs. closed systems. Today is the time of the closed systems. The Apple II was wide open and while the first Mac hardware was the exact opposite you could still do whatever your wanted in software. Even if there were no official hooks for this and that, as long as you knew how to access something there was no one holding you back....

We humans and our Earth

As you know we at DEVONtechnologies care about our environment (see also my posting about our web service provider building a “green” facility). Just recently Sarah Wenger of www.onlinemastersdegree.com, who has produced quite a few info graphics on the net, has sent us a nice info graphic about humankind in general and our impact on Earth that I thought would be worth sharing in this spirit. Click on the image to the right to see the full picture.

Pair Networks building a “green hosting facility”

Since its founding in 2002 DEVONtechnologies is committed to protecting the environment. DEVONtechnologies donates on a regular basis to the World-wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and encourages everyone to switch to renewable energy sources. I personally receive my electricity from a local waterpower station, Christian, our chief engineer, is just building his new house using a heat pump and other state-of-the-art technology. No wonder I am pleased to notice that Pair Networks, the data center that runs e.g. the DEVONtechnologies...

Japan needs our help

Last Friday, Mar 11, 2011, Japan was struck by a catastrophic earthquake followed by a tsunami and the melt-down of at least two nuclear power cores with yet-unknown effects on life in the region. Official sources report more than 10,000 people dead and more than 500,000 homeless, but as of today the concrete number of victims is still unknown. We will donate 20 percent of all March, 2011, revenues to a disaster help organization sending people and material to Japan,...
