Create notes in DEVONthink with Alfred

If you are a user of the popular productivity application Alfred you might like this workflow created by our forum user danielsh. You can navigate your databases or create new notes with just a few keystrokes.  Here’s what the author says about it: With Alfred’s new feedback system for workflows, you can navigate through your databases and find the group you’re looking for, then enter a space and start typing your note. If it’s much in demand, I’ll add things like...

Tuesday tip: Web sharing in a popup window

DEVONthink Pro Office‘s web sharing gives you sort of a simplified version of DEVONthink in a web browser. But how cool would it be if you could open a window to a DEVONthink Pro Office server like a regular app? You can — with Automator. Andy Ihnatko explains how this works on his blog.

Tuesday Tip: Create your own HUD

Keyboard Maestro allows you to automate things in almost any Mac app and assign it a shortcut. Even cooler is that when you assign the same shortcut to multiple macros Keyboard Maestro shows a head-up display with a list of all macros with this shortcut for you to choose from. Create e.g. a number of macros that all create a new document in DEVONthink of a certain type. Assign them all Command-N. When you now press Command-N you are presented...

Tuesday tip: Empty DEVONthink’s trash automagically

Using Keyboard Maestro you can automate emptying DEVONthink’s trash including dismissing the confirmation dialog. For this create a new Keyboard Maestro macro with the following steps: 1. Type Shift-Command-Delete. 2. Pause for 0.25 seconds. 3. Press the OK button. 4. Execute some AppleScript code to empty the Finder’s trash. 5. Post a Growl notification. If you like the idea of automating things, you should have a look at Keyboard Maestro.

Tuesday Tip: Automate DEVONthink using Hazel

Two weeks ago I have written about how to turn any folder into a hot folder by attaching “Folder Action Scripts” such as the mentioned “Import, OCR & Delete” one. A user sent us the tip that one could also use Noodlesoft’s Hazel for this, too. Hazel is a System Preferences pane that can run a large number of filing and cleaning task automatically and in the background. It can also run Automator workflows and so it is possible to...

Tuesday Tip: Import with OCR via Drag-and-Drop

The Folder Action Scripts that we supply with DEVONthink Pro (Office) allows you to turn any folder, e.g. one on your Desktop, into a hot folder. To attach a script to a folder of your choice, do the following: Open DEVONthink Pro and choose Help > Install Add-Ons. Check Folder Actions and install. This creates the “Folder Action Scripts” in ~/Library/Scripts and places our scripts. Or, of this is not available in your version: Copy the scripts from the folder “Extras/Scripts/Folder Actions/” on...

Tuesday Tip: Batch convert PDFs with OCR

If you want to import a batch of scanned PDFs without converting them to searchable PDFs right away, e.g. because you want to run the time-consuming OCR process later, you can easily do so. Import the files, e.g. to a group ‘To OCR’. Later, make sure to check Preferences > OCR > Original Document > Move to Trash, select all the documents, and convert them in one batch using ‘Data > Convert > to searchable PDF’. This replaces the selected...
