New tutorials about scanning and setting up a ScanSnap

With DEVONthink 2.4 we have introduced our new scanner/camera import window, and just yesterday we have released an update that makes scanning with Image Capture compliant flatbed scanners or all-in-one devices a lot more comfortable. Today we have published two new tutorials that guide you through the new scanner/camera import window (all editions of DEVONthink) and through setting up a Fujitsu ScanSnap document scanner for use with DEVONthink Pro Office. Check them both out directly in DEVONthink (Help > Tutorials)...

2nd public beta of new scanner and camera support

In the last few weeks we have fixed a number of bugs in our new scanner and camera support plugin (see my first posting here) as well as a new bug reporting function that makes it easier for you to report a bug. So if you are a DEVONthink Pro Office user and own a scanner other than a Fujitsu ScanSnap (we support this using a different technique), a digital camera, iPhone, iPod, or iPad with a camera please download the...

Public beta: New scanner and camera support

Many of you are using DEVONthink Pro Office as the heart of your paperless office. And no paperless office without scanning. Therefore we have now completely rewritten our DEVONthink scanner support and updated it to use the latest Apple technology. The new scanner interface now fully supports all flatbed, sheet-fed, wireless, and network scanners as well as digital cameras and all iDevices with a camera that can be accessed also through the Image Capture application Before we make this plugin...

Web Tip: Snow Leopard scanner compatibility list

DEVONthink Pro Office uses Image Capture, Mac OS X’s own scanning framework, for accessing flat bed scanners, all-in-one devices, and document scanners (the Fujitsu ScanSnap is an exception, it uses a proprietary driver software). How would you know that your scanner is compatible? Simply try it. But, finally, with Mac OS X 10.6 ‘Snow Leopard’, there is a simpler way: Apple has published a list of compatible scanners: Click here to look up your scanner. Thank you, Apple! BTW: If...

Tuesday Tip: Use an unsupported scanner

DEVONthink Pro Office comes with built-in support for both Image-Capture-compliant scanners as well as ones that use a TWAIN driver to communicate with your Mac. Some scanners however refuse to work with both approaches and work best with their own scan software. Don’t worry, you can make even make most of these scanners work with DEVONthink. DEVONthink Pro Office recognizes scan applications by their internal signature. When these scan applications send a scan to DEVONthink (means: they tell DEVONthink to...

Tuesday Tip: Connect to unsupported scanners

DEVONthink Pro Office 1.5.3 supports scanning through both Image Capture and TWAIN drivers (via the embedded ExactScan Capture software). However, quite a few scanners come with no Mac driver of whatever nature. If you own such a scanner, e.g., from your long forgotten Windows days, you could give SANE a try. Popular on Linux, SANE (“Scanner Access Now Easy”) is a framework that comes with a large number of drivers for popular flatbed and document scanners. If you scanner is listed on...

Image Capture support is back

Today we have released DEVONthink Pro Office 1.5.3 as well as updates for DEVONthink Pro, DEVONthink Personal, and DEVONnote. We’re re-introducing Image Capture based scanning including grayscale and document feeder support so you now have the choice: Image Capture or TWAIN? Read more in our news.

Why didn’t they tell us earlier?

When Mac OS X 10.5 ‘Leopard’ came out, it broke our scanner support based on the system’s Image Capture framework. We had been in exchanges with the Developer Technical Support and their Image Capture team at that time to find out why our capture function worked on Mac OS X 10.4.x but not on 10.5. To no avail. After a frustrating six months we moved on and licensed ExactScan Capture which is now embedded into every copy of DEVONthink Pro...

Poll: Do you use a document scanner?

We see DEVONthink Pro Office as the ideal partner if for your paperless office. And if you’re really serious about going paperless office you needs a document scanner to digitize all the stuff that still comes in on paper — Letters, leaflets, magazine articles, … Do you use a document scanner already? Or are you considering getting one? Click here for my mini survey.

Tuesday Tip: Drive Your Scanner

DEVONthink Pro Office supports all scanners compatible to Apple Image Capture out-of-the-box. In addition it comes with an auto-configuration plugin for the Mac versions of the Fujitsu ScanSnap document scanners. But what do you do if your scanner is not supported? Or if you want to buy a high-end document scanner from Avision? Then you may want to have a look at ExactScan from ExactCODE. It’s a smart scan application that works with the whole Avision scanner line as well as...
