DEVONthink 2.9 is here with light-speed & super-safe sync

After three betas our next-generation sync has finally reached production status. Today we’ve released DEVONthink 2.9 with our completely rewritten synchronization. It’s built for speed, robustness and flexibility. It works both on the local network, with any removable volume, as well as with internet-based services such as Dropbox or WebDAV servers. Our next-generation sync is up to 688 times faster than DEVONthink 2.8 and up to 70 times faster than competing services. It uses less disk or cloud space and requires...

And another one: next-gen sync public beta 3

We announced that public beta 2 would be the final beta but we found what we hoped we would(n’t) find: critical bugs. So, here’s public beta 3 with important bug fixes. Please feel free to download the plugins using the link below. They come with installation and usage instructions included. Please read them completely. Then test this beta as thoroughly as you can and report all your findings as described in the Read Me. Thank you very much for your ongoing support!  DEVONcloudy 1.0...

Next-generation sync beta 2 available

In the past weeks we have corrected many minor issues in our upcoming next-generation sync technology (see our post about the first beta). Before we launch it as part of the official releases of DEVONthink and before DEVONthink To Go 2.0 hits the App Store, here’s a second and final public beta for you to install and try out. Please feel free to download the plugins using the link below. They come with installation and usage instructions included. Please read them completely. Then test this...

Next-generation sync now available as public beta

It’s no secret that we have been working for quite some time on a new sync technology (code name: “DEVONcloudy”, our little cloud). It replaces the Mac-to-Mac sync presently part of DEVONthink for Mac and will be the foundation of the upcoming DEVONthink To Go 2.0. The new sync uses direct network connections, WebDAV, or Dropbox to keep DEVONthink databases in sync between multiple Macs (and soon iOS devices). Exclusively on the Mac it can also use local sync stores, e.g. on file servers,...

Making progress

DEVONthink To Go 2.0b10

We promised to keep you updated on our progress with DEVONthink To Go 2.0 and our new sync technology. Two days ago we released beta 10 to our beta testers. The last new beta testers received their Test Flight invitations today. The next betas are going to see the addition of a second sync mode. It downloads only the metadata at first and the actual documents on demand or automatically when needed. This will make it possible to take out even larger databases and leave...

Beta test for new sync and DEVONthink To Go 2.0 starts

DEVONthink To Go sync settings

Since first mentioning DEVONthink To Go 2.0 more time has passed than we anticipated. We started to build our own sync technology including our own cloud service to use in both iOS and Mac versions of DEVONthink in 2013. Unfortunately our approach didn’t work out as expected and so we boxed the project in August 2015 to write an alternative sync from scratch. A few weeks ago we began the beta test of the new technology on the Mac. And yesterday we submitted DEVONthink To Go...

Tuesday Tip: Use Dropbox to sync with friends

If you are collaborating with others and using Dropbox as a DEVONthink sync location (never putting your database in a Dropbox or automatically cloud-synced folder), it is not possible to sync between Dropbox accounts. This means you need to have a shared account where everyone using the sync data will need to know the name and password to access it. This can create a problem because you would be giving everyone access to the whole account! But as one of the astute users, Frederiko, pointed out...

Spring updates, part one

“Alles neu macht der Mai,” Germans are saying. We do it already in April! We have just released maintenance updates for all three editions of DEVONthink as well as for DEVONnote. The update improves the reliability of synchronization, clipping with the Clip To DEVONthink browser extension as well as the bookmarklets, and many other parts of the apps. If you’re using the new web interface of DEVONthink Pro Office you’ll like that we have made it a lot faster. We...

DEVONthink 2.5 is here with syncing and web sharing

Using multiple computers, working from different places, sharing data with coworkers: In today’s highly connected world it’s essential to always have access to the latest data. And because we know that, of course, we worked hard on creating the most versatile yet robust synchronization technology and rewriting the build-in web server of DEVONthink Pro Office. All editions of DEVONthink 2.5 synchronize databases between multiple computers and locations either directly or via Dropbox, WebDAV, file servers, or just any mountable disk....
