Why didn’t they tell us earlier?

When Mac OS X 10.5 ‘Leopard’ came out, it broke our scanner support based on the system’s Image Capture framework. We had been in exchanges with the Developer Technical Support and their Image Capture team at that time to find out why our capture function worked on Mac OS X 10.4.x but not on 10.5. To no avail. After a frustrating six months we moved on and licensed ExactScan Capture which is now embedded into every copy of DEVONthink Pro Office. This works with all TWAIN scanners but breaks with some scanners that are only compatible to Image Capture, not TWAIN.

And suddenly this May Apple released a new sample application implementing scanning with Image Capture on Leopard. And guess what? Image Capture in Mac OS X 10.5 does almost everything differently from Tiger but does not document it anywhere. (Besides an offer to pay for it.) Why didn’t they simply tell us when we asked last November? Now we’re resurrecting our own capture plugin and the next release of DEVONthink Pro Office will come with both plugins, ExactScan Capture for TWAIN and our own for Image Capture. Whatever scanner you have, one of the two should be able to access it.

Wow, that sounds like a complete pain in the ass. Considering your flagship product is heavily based on scanning, this must have been quite the experience.

On behalf of all DevonThink users thanks for getting this fixed!

This is great news. I recently bought “Neat Receipts” scanner and look forward to using it with devonthink. At the moment it is not supported. Thank you

Cautiously optimistic that this will finally resolve the scanning-related problems. The ExactScan Capture module in the current release of DEVONthink Pro Office doesn’t work properly with my Epson scanner, and so I’m still forced to do all scanning outside of DEVONthink and subsequently import the documents. (It’s especially a pain for multi-page documents that I have to “stitch” together first).

When I use Epson TWAIN to scan a multi-page PDF, I get a menu that pops up after scanning each page that asks if I want to “Save” or “Add a Page.” Is this not happening for you?

Hopefully soon? Basically, Devonthink Pro Office has been crippled by this scanner issue. My Epson scanner does not work at all with DevonThink Pro Office and 10.5.3
