A note about Snow Leopard

Today Apple announced the availability of Mac OS X 10.6 ‘Snow Leopard’ for August 28. We have already received a lot of questions regarding compatibility of our applications to the new release of the operating system. So here’s our statement:

We are going to support Snow Leopard as soon as we possibly can and we’re already working on it of course. We may release a new build of DEVONthink before Snow Leopard ships but more likely in September. We have encountered a few glitches so far (e.g. that you cannot re-install the “Inbox in file save dialogs” due to changes in the Finder) but no serious issues that render the application unusable. The same is true for DEVONagent.

While DEVONthink 2.x will support 64 bit mode, 2.0 will not. DEVONthink is heavily optimized for performance and so there are more than a few lines to check before we can throw the switch. We will do these optimizations unhurriedly when 2.0 is final.

Update: I have posted a new article listing some known issued with Snow Leopard. Read more here.

Just installed Snow Leo.. DEVONMailConduit does not work with Apple Mail 4

  3. Eric says:

@Martin: We have already fixed this problem in the very next public beta (2.0pb7).

Hello, when you have a moment, a bit of clarification would be useful. What does DEVONthink 2.0 will not support 64 bit mode mean in terms of running it on Snow Leopard? Will the software run? Will I have to reboot into a 32bit version of the OS?

I realize that these questions arise from my own ignorance about some basic concepts of software development and have little to do with the quality of your explanation for the tech-savvy.

  5. Eric says:

@Amafortas: It means that the software will run but will not take full advantage of the 64 bit mode, e.g. addressing huge memory banks. It will run in 32 bit more even when the OS is booted into 64 bit mode.
