MacUpdate Pro & DEVONthink Pro Office

If you are using the MacUpdate Desktop app to update the software on your computer please be careful: DEVONthink Pro and Pro Office are using the same “Bundle ID” to make both of them compatible to e.g. the same scripts and Automator actions. Unfortunately MacUpdate Desktop is using the Bundle ID for identifying updates. So it can happen that it, out of confusion, updates a DEVONthink Pro to a Pro Office or vice versa which then of course, asks for a proper license code.

We will change our approach here with a future version but we cannot do this for the current versions as it would break proper scriptability for many.

So if you are using MacUpdate Desktop please exclude DEVONthink Pro or Pro Office from the tracked applications and let it update itself using the built-in update function.

Is this something caused by MacUpdate? If so, why not request that they fix eir MacUpdate Desktop app? This sort of thing happens often in my experience as a MacUpdate Desktop susbscriber. Also, beta versions of apps are regularly posted as updates.

It’s been so frustrating that I intended to let my subscription expire this year but I screwed myself over by confusing my renewal date with something else. Ha!

No, it is caused by the fact that both DEVONthink Pro and DEVONthink Pro Office are using the same bundle identifier – and MacUpdate Desktop is using bundle identifiers to keep apps apart, not the “display name”. I have talked to them but they consider it something we have to solve (which we cannot without breaking most third-party scripts and Automator actions) so: bummer. Sorry.
