Tool tip: Structure your thoughts with mind mapping

What method to use for capturing thoughts is a highly subjective subject: some write outlines, some just a simple text, and some prefer mind maps. DEVONthink supports text and very simple outlines (e.g. using rich text lists), but not (yet) mind maps. Some options are:

MindNode Pro
NovaMind Pro
Mindcad Incubator

Some of these apps come either with a Quick Look plugin that allows DEVONthink to preview them when you add them to your database or at least write PDFs that you can add to your project files in DEVONthink.

There has also been a discussion on our user forum that might be interesting for you in case you’re interested in using a mind mapping app with DEVONthink. Click here.

“but not (yet) mind maps.” The “yet” is very encouraging! Some type of automated mapping would be great! Maybe with connections based on tags and links between documents. Maybe something similar to the Navigator view in a product called ConnectedText. Keep up the good work!

Typo here – the page says “MindNote Pro”, but the link is to the (correct) MindNode Pro.

There’s also a mind mapping program for iPad called “Simple Mind” that I like a lot.

IHMC CmapTools ( should be on your list!!! While not a “mind mapping” program per se…it is the original and in my opinion has the best UI and functionality of this genre. The research behind this form of learning and note keeping is from the founder of this program…Joseph Novak.

The current version of NovaMind (v5) does not yet support QuickLook. The author says it will return later.
