Tuesday tip: Clip and search with PopClip

PopClip extension

PopClip is a marvelous little app that gives you an iOS-style contextual menu for selected text with the usual options: Copy, Cut, Paste, etc. But beyond what is available out of the box it can be easily extended. Install the DEVONthink Pro (Office) PopClip extension from our Download Extras and Manuals page and clip selected text to your inbox or search your databases for the text with just one click.

Very nice. Definitely enhances the DEVONthink experience.

I downloaded this clip a week ago. It works well, but it’s also very confusing: it’s actually 2 popclips: clip and search. And the icons are both so small, and so similar (due to their smallness), that it’s hard to make out the diffence. Is there some way we could load just one? I’d only use the “clip” one, and the search one just causes unnecessary visual confusion.

@Matthew (and Eric): I’m the developer of PopClip. Great suggestion! I’ve updated the DEVONthink extension to add an option over which actions will appear, like so:
    [x] Clip to DEVONthink
    [x] Search in DEVONthink
To get this, you’ll need to download the updated extension from http://pilotmoon.com/popclip/extensions/page/DEVONthinkPro

  4. @ Nick: Cool! Thank you! I was fascinated by the possibility to add multiple commands with a single extension. Great API, BTW!

Perfection! Thanks so much. This is an extremely useful PopClip extension.

  6. John says:

    – great initial concept.
    – super extendable through extensions
    – extremely responsive developer

What I love most about the PopClip/DEVONthink combo is that it is just this tiny bar with the tiny icon that can be used content to the big sorting beast. Yes, I know that the context menu can do it too but it is less elegant.

    Thanks for this PopClip extension.

  7. John says:

“… can be used TO ADD content …”

For a while now Safari has the tendency to eat parts of text in comment boxes when parts of the text get highlighted. Sigh.

  8. Justin says:

Thank you so much for this extension!

  9. Rpor says:

Great extension. Any chance it could be modified to capture selection in RTF format rather than plain text?

  10. @ Rpor: No, only plain text or HTML. PopClip doesn’t deliver RTF.

Nice little extension to DTPO capabilities. Thanks for this:-)

  12. David says:

PopClip is a superb user experience. I’d pay €20 for it, I like it so much. Integrating PopClip and DEVONThink is brilliant.

  13. John says:

It would be even greater if PopClip’s PDF Highlight extension would work in the DEVON apps too!

And if maybe there would be a Set Title As extension to exclusively work in DEVONthink …

  14. eboehnisch says:

@ John: For the PDF Highlight extension to work it needs to be updated. Please feel free to contact the author of the extension 🙂 And writing extensions is easy, writing a Set Title As extension should be easily done. There’s great documentation by the PopClip people. 😀
