DEVONthink to adopt Blockchain technology

Use Blockchain

The most-discussed new technology in the last few years is clearly the Blockchain. While it’s best known as the basis for Bitcoin it’s main advantage is its highly decentralized approach to data storage. Data is added in encrypted form to a robust chain of byte blocks that make tempering with it impossible. Reliable versioning comes with the approach as a free extra, and as all data is not only stored locally but also on an uncountable number of other computers world-wide data loss is something no longer worth thinking about.

This makes the blockchain ideal for data-centric applications like DEVONthink. Starting today, April 1st, 2018, the synchronization built into DEVONthink will, in addition to the sync locations you’ve set up yourself, add your data in 256-bit encrypted form to the DEVONthink Blockchain. To opt out of this new service simply uncheck Add to blockchain in DEVONthink’s Preferences > Sync.

Note: As the blockchain is basically duplicated to all participating computers and data is never deleted from it but only added, the disk space needed for the synchronization will slightly increase after activation. The data stored in DEVONthink is a lot larger than the simple transactions in the Bitcoin blockchain but as we use efficient compression we don’t expect it to grow more than than two Petabytes per year in the beginning. Also, calculating new blocks is a CPU-intensive task so you might want to leave your computer running over night and switch to a reasonable-priced electricity provider.

    That’s a good one!
Happy April fools day, Eric. 🙂

  2. D Keefe says:

Well-played! You had me there for a second. Well, a minute. Okay, okay…I had to read it twice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  3. Bob Robertson says:

    Nice try 😉

  4. David McNaughtan says:

    Happy April Fools Day

    Happy Apr 1st!

I don’t have the blockchain option

  7. James says:

    excelllent – well done! 🙂

As ever, DEVONthink is at the forefront when it comes to mining the new technology. This is an eggciting enhancement coming as it does at Easter on April 1st.

Will the team at DEVONthink be helping to identify a good source for the 2 petabytes of storage that we will all need? I have a large brick outbuilding that could house the disk drives for now but I may need to add another storey to the main house.

Best wishes and thanks for a great product!

  9. Andrew-Bede Allsop says:

I have been waiting for this announcement since this time last year and in preparation I have already arranged with my Building Society a Mortgage to finance the building of suitable accommodation for the disk drives that will be needed.

  10. Bart says:

    You got me. Happy today.

This is a great idea. Finally, someone has developed a way to make use of blockchain technology for average folks. Now, if I ever have problems finding a file like my tax forms or something, I can just ask my neighbor, or even the person sitting next to me in the coffee shop.

Keep up the good work, and full speed ahead!

  12. Bruno says:

Great news! I just need to find a place to order tons of floppy disks as I store all my DT databases on them. Any suggestion ? 😀

  13. @ David Parker: Of course. We’ll soon have some good suppliers for HD storage ready for you 😉

  14. @ Bruno: What about asking some farmer if you could use one of his sheds? Or some abandoned fabrication halls in Detroit?

  15. Christian says:

I love it. I took pains to keep my databases as small as possible, since disk space has become much too expensive these days. From now on I never have to worry again about overprized hard disks, security and privacy issues. Finally, I can move my complete photo, movie and music libraries to DevonThink. Thank God, thank Blockchain, thank DevonThink. This Eastern Sunday marks the beginning of a new era. Who cares sitting in the dark when you know you are data is where the sun shines endlessly.
    All the best from Germany
PS: I’ll be back next month, I am about to start syncing now.

  16. Yannick says:

    April fool’s joke. 🤣

  17. Jack Raats says:

    Hi Devonthink.
Thansk a lot. It works right out of the box!!! I’ll hope it still works tomorrow (april the second 🙂 )

  18. nishiazabu says:

Excellent. Hope my 10 petabyte SSD does not fill up too fast. But I am running on a new pre-release Mac Pro for testing and it is good.

  19. Antonio says:

I too don’t have the Blockchain option!

  20. Jim Neumann says:

Thanks to everyone who graciously enjoyed our observation of April Fool’s Day!
(PS: I momentarily fell for it myself! Hahaha!)

  21. Andrew Barber says:

Would what a good idea. I have just had extensive solar power installed in my house. Because I have easy availability of energy could I get Devonthink 3 (when it eventually comes out) for free please if I make use of this service.

  22. Jim Neumann says:

I’m using geothermal, and considering relocating closer to a lava vent for even higher performance.

  23. DreamingVoid says:

Does anybody know a good 256 bay NAS I can store my Devonthink Blockchain on.

  24. Jim Neumann says:

I think you can get one at Walmart or Best Buy.

  25. Nicolas says:

Gee, you got me on this one!
Was trying to figure out what it would change for me. And to swallow the “Please leave your computer up all night, thanks”, *then* I saw the date of that post!

  26. Jim Neumann says:

Haha! That’s exactly what I did too!
