Tuesday Tip: Search depth in DEVONagent

With DEVONagent Pro, there are several built in Web search sets. These range from the quickly returning Web (Express) to a much longer running Web (Deepest). While the tendency may be to opt for the deepest searches possible, you should understand these searches will take much longer as links are followed more deeply. If you have ever rabbit-trailed while reading a web page and found yourself far from where you started, consider this before choosing the Web (Deepest) option. Here’s...

For German readers: VHS-Kurs zu DEVONthink in Paderborn

Paderborn

DEVONthink To Go 2.5 adds security features

DEVONthink To Go 2.5 Security Settings

We know that you care about your privacy. But we also know that from time to time you hand your iPhone or iPad to friends or colleagues. Which means that they could, in an unattented moment, open DEVONthink To Go and have a look at your databases. With its new app-wide passcode version 2.5 makes sure that they can’t. Optionally use Face ID or Touch ID instead of typing your passcode over and over. You can also set how long...

Club MacStories

In his most recent exclusive Club MacStories newsletter Federico Viticci chatted with me about the tech industry, the difference between Mac and iOS apps, and how DEVONtechnologies approaches the problem of the data flood. We also talked about iOS 11 productivity features, Project Marzipan, and about using iOS in light aircraft cockpits. Tuesday Tip: Shorten long filenames

Names. Names should allow us to quickly identify something at a glance. “Tiger”. Yeah, I know what that is. “2012 Taxes”. Got it. “4d0f1bfec91ff2472.doc”… wait, what?!? To make things easier we can create a more specific name, like “BankOne VISA – January 2018 Statement – PAID – 2018-01-15.pdf” This is certainly more clear but such long filenames may not fully display in all applications or on smaller form factor devices. And word-wrapping can sometimes add to the confusion. Here is an...

Tuesday Tip: Sheets of external data

One of the coolest features in Microsoft Excel is the ability to link a spreadsheet to a delimited text file (like comma- or tab-delimited) in the Finder. This allows you to populate and update the spreadsheet with the data from the text file without having to type in the data yourself. When the text file changes, Excel reflects this change in the spreadsheet too. While DEVONthink’s sheet format is not a spreadsheet per se, it can function in a similar...

DEVONthink To Go 2.4.4 fixes a few minor issues

DEVONthink To Go editing anotations

While we’re preparing our next feature release for DEVONthink To Go, a maintainance update to version 2.4.4 has just passed Apple’s review. It enables editing existing PDF annotations without switching to edit mode and fixes issues related to rotating the device, swiping databases, the grid view, and the PDF annotation toolbar. We recommend this free update to all users. Update your copy through the App Store app or receive the update automatically, depending on your App Store settings.

Tuesday Tip: Find a file service or make OneDrive work with sync

Icon showing a computer and iOS devices synchronizing

Our synchronization technology for DEVONthink and DEVONthink To Go supports direct connections via the local network, Dropbox, and WebDAV. WebDAV is a standard protocol for connecting to file services over the internet. You can mount WebDAV servers in the Finder just like a remote hard drive, upload and download files, or move things around. It’s a solid standard and DEVONthink can use it for managing its sync stores, folders containing all the files needed for synchronizing one or more databases between...

Decluttering service working again

Clip to DEVONthink clutter-free

Due to a server update our decluttering service no longer worked since last Thursday. The service is used by our Clip to DEVONthink extension on Mac and iOS for capturing articles from web pages without ads and other chrome. The issue is fixed and clipping web pages should work again now. We apologize for the inconveniences.

DEVONthink To Go 2.4.3 improves sync reliability and more

DEVONthink To Go Sync Automatically Setting

We’ve just released an update for DEVONthink To Go to version 2.4.3. This time it’s all about synchronization. So we added the ability to synchronize when you switch to another app. This makes sure that the changes you’ve made are uploaded to your sync store. If you lock the device, iOS immediately removes access to all encrypted data on disk to protect it. In this case DEVONthink To Go stops the synchronization quietly and retries when you come back to it later....
